Digital Marketing Statistics for 2026: What the Numbers Mean for Indian Businesses

Home/Blog/Digital Marketing Statistics for 2026: What the…

Every Number Here Has a Source

This page replaces our older list of “120 statistics for 2025”. Too many of those numbers had no traceable source, and a statistic you can’t check is just a claim. Every figure below links to where it came from, with the date it describes. Where a number is a projection or comes from outside India, we say so.

India Is Online — and Overwhelmingly on Mobile

  • 1.03 billion people were using the internet in India at the end of 2025 — 70% of the population, up 223 million in a year (DataReportal, Digital 2026: India, October 2025 data).
  • 500 million social media user identities — 34.1% of the population. Identities aren’t the same as unique people, so treat this as a ceiling, not a headcount (same source).
  • 1.06 billion cellular mobile connections were active in late 2025 (same source).
  • 77.3% of web traffic in India came from mobile in September 2026; desktop was 22.1% (Statcounter).

What it means: if your website is built and reviewed on a laptop, you are checking the version most of your customers never see.

Where Indian Audiences Can Be Reached

Advertising reach, late 2025 (DataReportal):

  • YouTube: 500 million users
  • Instagram: 481 million
  • Facebook: 403 million
  • LinkedIn: 170 million members — far smaller, but it’s where business decision-makers can be found by job title

Search: Still Google — but AI Answers Are Changing the Clicks

  • Google handled 96.63% of searches in India in September 2026; Bing had 1.92% (Statcounter). Bing’s share is small, but its index also feeds Microsoft Copilot and, by most accounts, ChatGPT’s search — which is why it matters more than its share suggests.
  • Organic click-through rate was 2.4% on searches showing a Google AI Overview, against 3.8% on searches without one (February 2026) — but pages cited inside the AI Overview earned 120% more clicks per impression than pages that weren’t (Seer Interactive, 2026 update, 53 brands, 5.47 million queries, January 2025 – February 2026).
  • In an earlier US panel study, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it didn’t (Pew Research Center, March 2025 browsing data — US, not India).

What it means: ranking is no longer the whole job. Being the source an AI answer quotes is worth chasing — we wrote up how in how a Bangalore business gets cited by ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers.

Where Advertising Money Is Going

  • India’s advertising industry closed 2025 at ₹1,21,339 crore (dentsu-e4m Digital Advertising Report 2026, via Mediainfoline, February 2026).
  • Digital advertising grew 19% in 2025 to ₹71,621 crore, and is projected to reach ₹98,034 crore by 2027 — nearly 70% of all ad spend (same report; the 2027 figure is a projection).

What it means: most of the competition for your customers’ attention is now online, and growing faster than the market as a whole.

How Marketers Are Using AI

From HubSpot’s 2026 State of Marketing (1,500+ marketers worldwide, updated April 2026):

  • 86.4% of marketing teams use AI in at least a few areas of their work.
  • About a third say AI saves their team 10–14 hours a week, and another third say more than 15.
  • 67.5% say they know how to measure AI’s impact, up from 48% in 2025.
  • Short-form video was the channel most often named for ROI (48.6%).

These are global figures, not India-specific, and they describe what marketers report, not measured outcomes.

Commerce and Payments

  • India’s online retail market is projected to cross $90 billion in 2026, growing 22–24% for the year, after around 25% growth in the first half (Redseer, via BW Retail World, September 2026 — the full-year figure is a projection).
  • Redseer expects 180–185 million online shoppers during the 2026 festive season (same source).
  • UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore in September 2026 — up 23% in volume year on year, about 802 million a day (NPCI data, via DD India).

What it means: paying online is now routine for a very large share of Indian customers. Friction at checkout or booking is a bigger reason to lose a sale than a customer’s unwillingness to transact online.

What We’d Take From These Numbers

Our reading, not a statistic:

  1. Check your site on a phone first. Three-quarters of the traffic is there.
  2. Treat Google as the main search engine, but don’t ignore Bing. It costs little to set up and feeds the AI assistants.
  3. Write pages that answer questions directly. Being quoted in an AI answer is now worth more than ranking just below it.
  4. Measure what you spend. Digital is approaching 70% of ad spend in India; if you can’t tie it to enquiries, our analytics and reporting team can help.
  5. Use statistics with sources. If a number in a deck or a blog has no link and no date, it shouldn’t be driving a decision.
